And 4 years later, on a cold and snow-patched day in March 2018, she completed her trip when she arrived back at the Ace Cafe. Christopher Venter  In 2013, Christopher Venter went on an adventure on a 150cc LML Vespa scooter with three other riders. They had set out on a charity ride for a local children’s hospital. His 32,000 km trip took him from Cape Town, South Africa to Dublin, Ireland, with some detours along the way. An illness he contracted while riding in Africa meant he had to make some changes to his route as he sought medical attention. And then being the adventurer that he was, he continued the trip, even though he still felt some of the effects of the illness. When Christopher completed the trip, and he was still not feeling well, he again sought medical help. After much testing, Christopher received some startling news and his life was forever changed. The outcome could have been very different, but Christopher’s story gives us all hope that any challenge can be met with the right attitude. A Scientist, a Pillion, a Racer and a Long Distance Rider: On Staying Alert

According to the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Inc in Australia, the symptoms of fatigue for drivers of enclosed vehicles may differ from a fatigued motorcyclist. It’s important to recognize these signs. *Driver Fatigue Symptoms include: •loss of concentration •drowsiness, yawning •slow reactions •sore or tired eyes •boredom •feeling irritable and restless •making fewer and larger steering corrections •missing road signs •having difficulty in staying in the lane •having microsleeps. *The symptoms of rider fatigue include: •joint and muscle stiffness •pain or weakness in hands and feet •loss of concentration •slow or impaired judgment and reactions. *Excerpts taken from http://roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.au/a/50.html And the scary thing is that although a rider may feel fully awake, they may actually be fatigued without realizing it, and make a judgement error, resulting in crashing on a curve or an accident while overtaking another vehicle. Because riding a motorcycle is different than riding a car, in that it is more demanding both mentally and physically, it’s likely you’ll be tired from the physical challenges rather than boredom. From Start to Finish: Determined to Cross the Line

Dimitrios Tournas was born in Greece, moved to the Netherlands when he was 29 and now lives in the United States. If you’ve seen the movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey, then you’ve already got a pretty good insight in to Dimitri. Although he is more sensible about the lengths he will go to, he does like to seize opportunities to complete tasks that are achievable.  In 2004, when visiting Greece he had a motorcycle accident that left him with the realization that life was not infinite, and that even if you don’t take risks, and live your life cautiously, the day will come when you may be at the end of your life looking back.  Although the accident deterred him from riding for many years, his interest in it didn’t evaporate. When he moved to the United States his passion was reignited and it set him on the path to expanding his comfort zone. He once again took up riding, and he purchased a dual sport motorcycle. When he saw a GS Trophy poster at the BMW dealership, even with no off-road riding experience, he decided to sign up for a riding school course with his sights set on competing in the challenging adventure. The Motorcycle School of Life: David & Emy Woodburn

David Woodburn is from Australia, and he’s been doing trips on a motorcycle since he was 17 years old. In 1986 he met Emy in the Philippines, where they worked together doing volunteer work. They married, returned to Australia and managed to pull together enough money to buy a well used motorcycle. Soon Amy discovered she was pregnant, and their daughter, Mattea was born. Finding it difficult to find work, the loaded their motorcycle with a sidecar and started their journey in 1990. They travelled around Europe and Africa until Mattea was 11 years old, and ended up settling in Miami, Florida, which was the biggest culture shock for them. Now almost two decades later, they live in Georgia and run an independent workshop specializing in older BMW and British motorcycles. Helge Pedersen |10 Years on 2 Wheels

Back in 1982, Helge Pedersen bought one of the first BMW R80GS motorcycles to enter his home country, Norway. Northeast by Northwest: Two Restorative Journeys Mike Fitterling was dealing with depression and stress, a common issue with people around the world.  According to the World Health Organization, “depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide”. More than 300 million people suffer from depression, and in many countries there is little to no support available, and even in higher income countries, nearly 50% of people do not get treatment. Mike’s story is something that most people can connect with. At some point or another, we all have to deal with stressful situations, that may affect us more deeply than we think possible. And climbing out of that can be overwhelming. To deal with his depression, Mike decided a motorcycle trip was what was needed, he had to find a way to help himself. Motorcycle Chronicles: Why Taking Photographs and Recording Your Trip is so Important

Social media has become a popular source of how we share our life, including our travels or adventures. And through social media, we share our photos and usually include a write up to show what we’re doing, where we’ve been. And if we want to get back to basics, well photography has been around for a long time, and looking at a photo can you put you right in to the picture, you can imagine the sounds and smells, and it gives us insight in to things we might otherwise never get to see. And journal keeping, be it on a blog or by written word, has the same effects on us, except we use our imagination to picture where the author is. Both are incredible ways to share stories, and for us to look back on where we’ve been, to refresh the memories from long ago. In this episode we talk to Tim Burke, who documents his journeys through photography and we have a flashback to an interview with Graham Field, who is an avid daily diary keeper. Lone Rider: Globe-Trotting Before the Internet

What would it be like if you couldn't just turn on your computer and ask google all the questions you want to help plan your trip? Everything from planning and packing, to routing and picking your destinations. All the answers at your fingertips. And what if in the 1980's it was so against the norm for someone to set out on a long distance motorcycle trip, let alone a woman? Would you still have the nerve to ride around the world? Elspeth Beard has just published a book this summer, the one that we talked about in an interview with her last year. We'll remind you that it's the story of a 23 year old woman who in 1982 set off on a solo motorcycle trip around the world. Something relatively unheard of in those days, for both women and men. In fact, on her trip she only met two other motorcycle adventurers in the 2 1/2 years she was on the road.  Broken-hearted, she wasn't doing well in school and decided to embark on this trip to prove herself. Ridiculed by the editor and his "chauvinist colleagues" at a popular motorcycle magazine in London, she was only all that more determined to achieve her goal.  After years away, she returned home, wiser and with the knowledge that she could do anything she set out to do. But, publishing a book at the time seemed like a dead end road, as no one was interested in her story. And after storing away all her notes, audio files and memories for almost 35 years, she finally wrote the book that she wanted to all those years ago. And here we have it, Lone Rider - The First British Woman to Motorcycle Around the World. Elspeth Beard has shared some of her audio files with Adventure Rider Radio, the sound of her younger voice all those years ago that she recorded to share with her parents. And, we also talk to someone who was in a position to either empower or disempower her while she was on this trip, something Elspeth wasn't aware of at the time that we created this episode for you, our listener.
