Mary McGee - Legendary Motorcycle Racer Mary McGee is truly an inspirational rider, who has paved the way for many women competitors and riders alike. She started out racing cars in the 1950’s and then got in to motorcycle road racing, enduro, motocross and finally vintage racing in the 2000’s. She started racing long before it was acceptable for women, racing against men simply because there weren’t any women’s classes in racing. And when Mary received the FIM Woman Legend in 2012, she finally decided to get her street riding license, and signed up for a basic motorcycle riding class! Mary turns 80 years old this year, and when you hear her voice in this interview, she just doesn’t sound like your average octogenarian. She’s witty, spry and just sounds way younger than her years. It must be motorcycling that keeps her young, and if that’s the case, then we should all be doing it. Bravo Mary! You are one of our greatest mentors! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mary.mcgee.3745?ref=br_rs Brad Barker - Operation Ecuador Brad is the producer of The Ride of My Life videos and website, with the goal of discovering the good stuff, exploring and riding to different places in the world, and to impact lives in a positive way. In April 2016, the people of Ecuador were struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and are still in desperate need of aid. Brad went down to Ecuador and helped a local motorcycle club distribute some supplies to the victims. Brad Barker is planning Operation Ecuador, and is gathering donations of money and supplies to deliver to Ecuador. In partnership with RawHyde, the Coalition of Hope Foundation and the local Ecuador motorcycle club, the Brosters, he is taking a relief shipment down when the containers are full. They are seeking financial and good donations, as well as asking for help to unload and distribute goods. If you would like to help in any of these ways, check out Brad’s website. We can find all kinds of reasons and excuses to keep putting off a short road trip, let alone a trip to other countries. As we all know, work can be the stopper in trip planning. We have to make money to support our riding addictions after all! And what if you’re just not comfortable enough to ride on your own, would a group tour be just the thing for you? Or if you know nothing about bike repairs? Even the biggest of problems has a solution, sometimes you have to jump through some hoops, make mistakes or just figure it out. While some obstacles can be intimidating or difficult, once you overcome them you may be surprised what you discover. In this episode we talk with Kinga Tanajewska and Brian Clarke about their adventure motorcycle trips and what they had to do to get there. Kinga Tanajewska - Combining Work & Adventure in Australia Kinga Tanajewska knew an interest of motorcycles at a young age, and rode street bikes since her teens when her parents bought her a motorcycle for graduation. She moved from Poland to Australia, and there developed a passion for adventure motorcycling led by her desire to see as much of Australia’s outback as she could. She had a dream to ride around Australia, but wanted to keep her job. She also had no repair skills in case she had a flat or other break down. By splitting her trip in to two parts, and incorporating a couple of job transfers, she was able to mesh work and riding and ride solo around Australia. She experienced beautiful scenery, wildlife, and remote camping. For Kinga, changing a tire turned out not to be a concern after all, and now she is grabs any opportunity to ride. We call that rider mania! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/onherbikeWebsite: onherbike.comYoutube Channel: youtube.com/onherbike Brian Clarke - People & Places Make the Adventure Brian Clarke wasn’t happy being a mechanic, he’d had some failed relationships and was in desperate need for a change in his life. He’d always loved motorcycles but the expense kept him from riding, until he bought an old 600 Bandit and then he was hooked. Not knowing much about long distance adventure travel, he decided to book a Pan America motorcycle tour. Although his bike did break down just before the near three month trip was over, and the tour had proved challenging in more ways than one, Brian now realized that he was able to travel on his own. He didn’t need to rely on anyone else to guide him. He returned to the UK, leaving his motorcycle in Calgary, Canada. After a year, he flew back, got his bike and his two wheeled travel life began. Brian eyes were opened to the beauty of the land and people in the places he visited. He met the love of his life, motorcyclist Michelle Lamphere, and instead of an undesirable job, he passionately pursues riding and submits articles to various moto publications. Life is good! In October 2014, Liz and her partner Con Feyen set out travel from Australia to London with a 12 month window planned for their trip. They had sold, stored or donated all their belongings, except for what they needed for the trip, and while it may seem scary to some people, they were excited about the freedom of being homeless and jobless and without “stuff”. Liz felt no trepidations about not being a very experienced motorcycle rider, and happily set out for London. Well, after 16 months of riding, they arrived in Iran. Seems their schedule had gone on the wayside and London was not to be attained on this trip. And while at times the trip may have been harder than what Liz thought it would be, she feels she is better off for having done it. She says that “it is never too late to start something new, learn something new and to put yourself in vulnerable situations”. And even now, Liz and Con are planning their next adventure as she hones her skills back in Australia. After living in Australia for 12 years, Will & Kate were feeling homesick for the UK and decided it was time to go home. They could have just booked a flight and within the day been back home. But when opportunity knocks, why not open the door? Many people find it hard in their busy lives to take the time to go on an adventure. It seems to be a common thread where we all long for it, but don't seem able to pull it together. Will and Kate had already done some travelling, but not on their motorcycles, especially as Kate was a new rider and hadn't done any long rides as yet. This was their chance to turn a long move in to an amazing trip spanning across 20 countries and about 21,000 km. In two months, they planned their trip and then left Wollongong for Woolwich. They experienced many different cultures, and had varying receptions. They faced food and accommodation challenges. And although well planned, they still had stressful times, and dramatic moments. But, through and through, it was an escapade which they thoroughly enjoyed... and much more fun than a long plane ride. Carl Reese - Endurance Rider & Record Setter
You’ve probably heard of the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run. In 1933 Erwin George “Cannon Ball” Baker drove from New York City to Los Angeles in a Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak 8 in 53.5 hours. No one broke that record for 40 years.
Car and Driver writer Brock Yates and editor Steve Smith organized the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, which took place 5 times between 1971 and 1979. It was an illegal road race from coast to coast to celebrate the United States Interstate Highway System and to protest strict traffic laws which were coming in to effect at that time. The first run was not a competitive race, as there was only one team running in a 1971 Dodge Custom Sportsman van. But by the time they were running the last race it was known as a wild race. They ran everything from Ferraris to pick-up trucks. It was mostly a secret event, with few witnesses.
As more and more people have tried to rush to break Cannonball Baker’s time, the route has become established and is commonly referred to as the Cannonball Baker or Cannonball Run.
Carl Reese is a contractor from California, and in his spare time he’s an endurance rider that has set seven world records in less than a year. One being the solo motorcycle “Cannonball” from Los Angeles to New York. Carl Reese set out to break the motorcycle record previously set by George Egloff in 1983, who completed the cross country run in 42 hours. Carl broke the record completing the run in 38 hours and 49 minutes. He’s now working on a documentary that highlights the history of transcontinental driving records.

Proof Positive - Motorcycle Riding Good for the Soul
Anyone who rides a motorcycle can probably tell you that riding a motorcycle isn’t just a form of transportation, it’s an experience. When you return from a motorcycle ride, you are energized and happy. Many motorcyclists refer to riding as their therapy. Feel bad? Need to sort out a problem? Ride. It works. Motorcycle riding releases endorphins which improve moods. Simple as that.
Studies show that riding motorcycles, both on and off-road, have both physical and mental health benefits.
In 2010, Tohoku University in Japan jointly with Yamaha conducted research in to the relationship between brain stimulation and riding motorcycles. Researchers measured brain activity to confirm whether riding a motorcycle activates the PFC, the prefrontal cortex. The PFC has been linked to a persons planning behaviours, personality development, decision making and social behaviour. Then they examined the effect of using a motorcycle daily. They found that the bilateral PFC was activated when riding a motorcycle and that daily riding is beneficial for improving various cognitive functions and for reducing mental stress.
A study on the “Quality of Life of Recreational Off-Road Riders” in 2010 as published in the Health & Fitness Journal of Canada, concluded that “habitual off-road riders appear to have relatively high physical and mental functioning, possibly as a result of their participation in recreational off-road riding. Both ATV (All Terrain Vehicles) and ORM (Off Road Motorcycle) riders revealed high QOL (Quality of Life) based on their MSC (Mental Component Scale) scores.” and “Overall, off-road riders had higher levels of physical functioning than Canadian population norms”.

Rally Raid’s Honda CB500X Adventure Bike
On this episode we talk about the Rally Raid conversion kit that transforms what is basically a street bike, the Honda CB500X, into what may the ultimate mid-weight adventure bike. The end result seems to impress everyone that comes across it and a quick look at some of the videos on this page have to impress you. With the heart of the beast being an ultra reliable Honda twin cylinder 471cc fuel injected power plant you are melding the Honda reliability with some incredibly well designed suspension pieces manufactured by Rally Raid and Tractive Suspension. Hidden nuggets include a two piston fork that has both high speed and low speed dampening, which is unheard of elsewhere.
“I can confirm that there is no other twin cylinder adventure bike on the market that even comes close to the all-round ability and confidence inspiring handling both on- and off-road that this bike now delivers with the Rally Raid Products upgrades,” says Morgan. “The best analogy I can think of is it rides like an open class rally bike, but with a lower seat and bullet-proof reliability. You will not be disappointed.”’ - Giant Loop press release

Anyone who is in to adventuring in the wilderness will at some time find themselves in remote locations with no communication to the rest of the world. When in the back of beyond, you still have loved ones to consider at home and a responsibility to them and yourself to seek help if something goes wrong. Depending on where you are, you may not readily have outside help available.
Fortunately, there is a solution to a dilemma or emergency, there is a way to call for help… from above.
In many locations in the world, there are devices available that make it so that you can have crisis services available, or at the very least you can make contact with someone that can get you help.
We speak with representatives from Spot and inReach. We also get the take on these products from a retail location at GPS Central and with someone who uses these products regularly on his motorcycle at VRideTV.

After putting almost a million miles on a motorbike as a courier in London, Geoff Thomas decided to pack it in, and in April, 2008, embarked on a motorcycle to travel the world. He took along with him the ashes of his parents to be delivered to his brother in California, while en route. On his return to England in November, 2008, he found that his rented apartment in Essex had burnt down, with all his belongings in it. Left only with his motorcycle and what was packed on it, he just decided to just keep on riding. To save on shipping costs, Geoff keeps a Triumph Tiger 955i in Europe, a Kawasaki KLR 650 in North America and a Tiger Retro 100 in South East Asia, where he also volunteers. Having, what Geoff says is a chronic allergy to most forms of work, he gets by on just $8000 US a year, and says he’s never felt richer.

Thom Rieck is an Exercise Specialist at the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program. He’s a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Certified Personal Trainer and PEAK Pilates Instructor. He has been working as a personal trainer for over 10 years and he’s also an avid motorcyclist.
Tom has been riding since the age of 2, believe it or not, when his father took him out on his ’74 Honda CB 250 in a car seat. He now rides a 1995 BMW K75S, all on his own.
Thom is currently working on a book called “Strength and Fitness for the Motorcyclist”. As an expert in exercise and the effects on the body, who is more qualified to give advice on staying fit to get the most out of riding a motorcycle? Thom says that motorcycles are designed to withstand city commuting, long trips and rough terrain, yet it is our bodies that can limit our riding endurance. His goal is to share his knowledge and experience to become your own personal trainer. He gives great advice about mobility, flexibility, cardiovascular and resistance training for the adventure rider. It isn’t about going to the gym every day, or spending hours working out. He says just taking 20 to 30 minutes a day will mean a longer life and better health. And if you want to be riding as long as you possible can, you might just want to consider Thom’s tips.

Issa & Nita Breibish’s Moto Journey: Getting From A to D As so often happens in life, we get caught up in what society expects us to do. Get a good education, get a good job, buy a house, have the right furniture, clothes, gadgets… and so on. We are expected to live our life in the “normal” way. In the western culture, if you don’t have the big house and fancy cars, and everything that goes along with it, including debt and stress, well… you just aren’t living. We think we need or want those things, that they will make us happy. But, as many studies have shown, life experience makes you happier than acquiring material things. Even those experiences which may be uncomfortable to us in the moment, make us feel more fulfilled. We may turn them in to funny stories or see them as a valuable learning experience. And stories, more than material things, are what connect us to other people. Because who doesn’t love a good story?Issa and Nita Breibish felt that something was missing in their life, and the more they thought about it the more they felt they needed to do something about it. They decided to sell everything and turn their material things in to experiences. After some planning, they left on a trip which would become an education in life for them. They haven’t rushed from place to place, they have taken the time to spend with the people and cultures they came across. Issa and Nita feel that time spent in one place has more value than tallying up the countries they have visited or how many miles they have travelled. And having had the time of their life, they are ready to hit the road again as soon as they can and to, as Nita says, not worry about getting from A to Z in an allotted time, but just meander from A to D.Highlights:- Trip preparation - gear or mind?- Material things = experience- Essential gear - how much is too much?- How to get more out of your tripTwitter: gomotogeoFacebook: www.facebook.com/welovemotogeo/Website: www.welovemotogeo.comYoutube Channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqryVUBbfVJl3kbAIHW9PIQSFU study: Contrary to expectations, life experiences better use of money than material items.http://news.sfsu.edu/contrary-expectations-life-experiences-better-use-money-material-itemsBrought to You By:Max BMW MotorcyclesShop our Online Store featuring parts diagrams for every BMW model. Luis Castilla started riding a motorcycle as therapy to help him deal with the death of his parents. It was something he became passionate about and in 2014, Luis and a friend rode from Mexico City to the Arctic Circle and back on BMW motorcycles.
Then in 2015, Luis Castilla entered the Discover More competition with Harley-Davidson. Imagine applying for a job where you get to ride a brand new motorcycle around Europe for three months, and you get paid for it! Not only that but you get to keep the motorcycle at the end of the trip. When Luis entered the contest, he had to submit written and video details to convince the Harley-Davidson team why he should be chosen. And well, with a 1 in 10,000 chance of winning, he must have impressed them.
In this episode, Luis Castilla tells us how riding a motorcycle and his European summer job changed his life.

Jeffrey Polnaja - First Indonesian Motorcyclist to Ride the WorldBefore Jeffrey started his around the world trip back in 2006, he heard the word “impossible” over and over again. Jeffrey comes from a country where solo world travel isn’t readily embraced by their culture, and travel is more often done in groups. The Indonesian Rupiah currency is very low in value compared to the US dollar. And people told him with the time needed, the distance he would cover, cultural differences and the natural challenges, that it was a far fetched idea and that it was an unattainable dream. A solo motorcycle trip around the world seemed absurd to many people in Indonesia, but Jeffrey had other plans. And the more people told him it was futile, the more determined he became. He slowly gained support through some friends and was sponsored by an adventure gear company for some camping and riding gear. But, after five years of planning and trying to get the financial support he needed to make his journey, he made the decision to sell his company. Then in 2006, with just a basic knowledge of English, and limited funds, he set off on his “Ride For Peace” journey on his GS Adventure.Jeffrey’s trip was inspired by his son enquiring about why there was so much unjust conflict in the world after 9/11. He wanted to experience the world and different cultures, and to discover for himself the good and the desire for peace that most people have. He found that you don’t need to have any special skills to take on such an adventure, that any ordinary person can do it. You just need an open mind. After 7 years of riding, Jeffrey is back in Indonesia to enlighten people as to what he has found on the road, but he isn’t finished his ride yet, and plans to head out again soon.** Jeffrey Polnaja is a Jupiter’s Traveller. Most people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. And we are quite used to our gas powered engine, with lots of torque, tanks that hold enough fuel to travel long distances and easy refuelling stations. Hey, it’s a tradition and who doesn’t love to hear the power in their engine? In the last few years though, motorcycle manufacturers have been introducing electric motorcycles. And while it is still a very new thing to us diehard bikers, electric motorcycles are starting to gain a toehold in this competitive industry. Till recently, it’s been the smaller manufacturers that have been leading this possible upcoming trend of quiet moto transport, but the major manufacturers are starting to come on board. When comparing performance of gas power to electric powered motorcycle, a few key points stand out. While traditional gas powered motorcycles are averaging 200 miles on a tank, electric powered motorcycles are only reaching just about half of that amount. But they require almost no maintenance and there are very few moving parts. You can refuel your gas powered motorcycle at almost every corner in any city and almost every town around the world, but it may be more difficult to find a place to recharge an electric bike. And when you do you may need to dedicate some time to this if using a regular 110 V outlet, as it may take up to 10 hours or more. But, dollar for dollar, with fuel costs being so high in some countries, the electric motorcycle could save you $100’s of dollars a year.Electric Motos - Neck Braces - ARR Show Announcement: ARR RAWElectric Moto - Victory Motorcycles - Josh KattMost people ride motorcycles for pleasure, and many as a means or preferred means of transportation. When comparing performance of gas power to electric powered motorcycles, a few key points stand out. But, dollar for dollar, with fuel costs being so high in some countries, the electric motorcycle could save you $100’s of dollars a year.Victory Motorcycles Product Manager at Polaris Industries, Josh Katt, talks electric motorcycles with Jim Martin.www.victorymotorcycles.comLeatt STX Road Neck Brace Review by Spencer Hill - The Gear Dudewww.thegeardude.comEvery time you swing a leg over a motorcycle you are assuming a certain amount of risk. If you were able to reduce some of that risk by wearing a neck brace would you take advantage of that?My main question going into testing of the Leatt STX Road neck brace was: Is the added protection this offers worth the additional bulk and effort of having take it on and off every time I ride? The STX Road neck brace is Leatt’s “street” specific entry in their lineup. It shares the same technology and many of the same features as one of Leatt’s racetrack or off road specific braces but has a lower profile and some design differences that make it more adept for street/adventure riding. These differences include a gap in the front of the brace for zipper access, rear scapula wings designed to fit around a back protector and most importantly it is optimized to fit over your riding gear. The general concept of the Leatt neck brace is to prevent extreme forward, backward or sideways extension of the neck in the event of an accident or impact. It also helps prevent compression of the spine by transferring impact force from the helmet to the brace. According to Leatt the use of one of their neck braces reduces the force of hyper extension (over-bending of the head in rearward direction) by 46%, posterior hyper-translation (extreme movement of the head and helmet to the rear) by 17%, hyper- flexion (over bending of the head in forward direction) by 21%, lateral hyper-flexion (over-bending of the head to one side) by 20% and coupled axial loading (axial force on the spine) by 17%. Those are real numbers that make a very strong argument for wearing one of their braces. Additionally the STX is CE tested and certified as personal protective equipment. After using the brace for a short period of time it became easy to forget that I was even wearing it. With it’s lightweight build and unobtrusive fit it seems to meld into your riding gear. Also after donning and doffing the STX multiple times with and without gloves in different circumstances it became second nature. The STX has a simple clamshell design that can hinge or be opened on either side with bright red clasps to help draw attention to emergency personnel in the event of an accident. Almost immediately after I started using the Leatt brace I new that the added “hassle” of this extra piece of equipment would be worth it, mostly because it wasn’t really a hassle at all. Honestly the most difficult aspect of getting used to wearing this brace was having the collar on my riding jacket fully fastened with the zipper all the way up. Head checks were another concern I had as far as the day-to-day use of this brace. I had heard from other riders that this was a real issue in older Leatt models, but I found that after a few rides it was just another thing about the STX that I didn’t notice much. My head checks have become much more pronounced because I cannot just glance down and back to either side over my shoulder like I used to but I think that is a good thing. Now when I go to do a head check I keep my chin up and look over my shoulder instinctively getting a good look at my blind spot. In my case it has helped me develop a positive habit. It also helps that the STX Road was designed for street and adventure use giving it a lower profile on the shoulder for this very reason. It may also be worth mentioning that I have a world-class short neck so if I can look over my shoulders to do head checks with this brace on then so can you!Quality and fit have a lot to do with how easily the STX became part of my riding routine. Strait out of the box I was impressed with the STX. Leatt ships every unit with detailed fitting instructions, different sizing pieces, a optional harness to keep the brace in position and all the tools necessary to make adjustments. In my case it took only a few minutes to swap out the medium spacers that come installed on the large size unit for the large spacers. After that one adjustment I haven’t looked back, the fit has been excellent. Leatt has very helpful sizing charts online to ensure you order the proper unit as well. The adjustments you make when you receive the brace are mostly just to dial in the fit for the particular gear you wear or unusual dimensions you might have. All and all I think that the Leatt STX Road neck brace is a fantastic product. The added level of protection is well worth the short adjustment period it takes to get used to wearing it. After several months of testing I feel almost naked riding without it, like I forgot my helmet or gloves. Leatt offers phenomenal quality and more experience in this field than any other manufacturer. After all they invented this style of neck brace. I have made the STX Road a permanent part of my riding gear and I can’t recommend it enough.Pros: - Phenomenal quality- High level of protection- Vasty array of sizing optionsCons:- Expensive- Takes some getting used to- Can make contact with some Bluetooth communication units depending on the helmetMSRP: $399.00 UShttp://www.leatt.com First Ride Up the DivideSpencer Hill and two newbie riders plan a trip from Mexico to Canada, off road up the Continental Divide to showcase the accessibility of adventure rider. http://www.thegeardude.com/#!First-Ride-Up-The-Divide/c20ru/564107d60cf21009be7ef127ARR RAW is a spin-off show from Adventure Rider Radio that has a different format and audio style. Michelle Hope - The Motorcycle Gypsy
Perhaps her name says it all, but when you hear Michelle Hope speak, it really instills in us the possibilities of throwing caution to the wind and choosing to live life to the fullest. That may be different for everyone, but for Michelle who had done the 9-5 job and raised her kids, it meant living like a gypsy, living on the road on a motorcycle.
When Michelle met a motorcycle traveller, Scooter Tramp Scotty, who had been living off his bike for over a decade, she was inspired by his way of life, and she made the decision to buy a bike and learn to ride.
Since 2006 she has been living off her bike, only stopping for two years to go to school, and since February 2015 she has been making a ‘viable drifter income’ doing spiritual healing massage work on the road.
She travels with her companion, Two-Lane, who is a little hairy but very loving. And has moved on to her second bike, bought for her by a complete stranger, someone she has never met before and has never met again.
The road is the only home Michelle knows now, and the only home she wants to know for as long as she can.

Have Dog, Will Travel - Mallory Paige, Baylor and Rufio star in Operation Moto Dog
Many people in this world have a dream to travel, but we aren’t living our dreams because of fear. Fear of not knowing enough, not having enough money or not having the right equipment. Fear of what our friends or family might think, fear of being alone. The biggest hurdle is getting past all that, and making up your mind to just do it.
Mallory Paige didn’t have a motorcycle, she didn’t even know how to ride one! She didn’t have any moto travel experience, or even any camping experience. Many people say it doesn’t take any courage to travel, but it does take determination. And that drive is what it took for Mallory to make the impossible, possible.

From the beginning of time people have set out on journeys of discovery and adventure in search of new lands, riches, food and sometimes I imagine, just for the sake of discovery with no idea or concept of an outcome. Perhaps with just the resolve that it WILL bring change and that change will mean good things to come.
All great things, large and small have be borne of journey’s mated with discovery of one kind or another.
And it’s in hindsight that the journeys are seen as “good causes” - rarely in the moment.
Most journeys have not only changed the lives of those whom experienced the journey first hand, but others as well. Sometimes through the discovery itself, new lands foods or ideas and other times just through connection and information and the telling of the story.
The cynical observer may describe a motorcycle journey as a narcissistic hoarding of time and resources for lofty intangible ideas that benefit of now one. Yet when we hear these journeys that others have taken it fuels our imagination, jumpstarts ideas and creative thought for our own life and provides a window through which we glimpse, even if for a moment another way.
Not all journeys are planned, some come about through an event or outside forces. Michelle Lamphere is one of those adventurers.
Michelle Lamphere was born is South Dakota, Sturgis South Dakota. And yes that is the famous Sturgis that each year attracts hundreds of thousands of bikers to celebrate, well, I’m not sure what they are celebrating but it’s a big gathering and a huge party. Anyway, Michelle grew up seeing the event for both good and bad grow each year and because of that motorcycles were just a way of life for her.
But riding for Michelle was limited to short runs on her Harley Davidson and the desire to meld the bike with adventure travel didn’t come until a stranger came to town. And when he did Michelle’s life took an unexpected sharp turn.

Shirley Hardy Rix and Brian Rix are seasoned world travellers and they have most recently been on a trip which includes Russia and the Stans. We’ve had them on the show in previous episodes giving us mini updates as to how their journey was going, and now, being back again in Australia, they have come on the show to share an incredible trip report including, at least our first introduction to, ’the forest people’ and how a motorcyclist travelling through their region was robbed and murdered. So, if you like mysteries and have ever been curious about motorcycle travel in Russia, bike shipping, internet access and how to overcome language barriers with one tiny book, then be sure to listen to this fascinating account of their experiences. On October 28, 2015, the National Insurance Crime Bureau released a report on United States motorbike thefts. In 2014, there was a total of 42,856 thefts reported, compared to 45,367 in 2013, a decrease of six percent. Great news, especially as motorcycle sales increased by four percent in the same period.
The top 5 motorcycle stolen (by manufacturer):
1. Honda
2. Yamaha
3. Suzuki
4. Kawasaki
5. Harley Davidson
Most motorcycle thefts occurred in August (4965) and the fewest were in February (1978) indicating a weather influenced pattern, which remains consistent with previous years.
With the cost of many motorcycle models now being $20,000 US or more, they have become a valuable target for thieves. The stolen bikes are either sold whole, stripped down for parts resale or reconstructed in to another motorcycle. Many parts, including frames, can be easily altered and reused. As such, there is a low recovery rate for stolen motorcycles, approximately 25-30 percent.
Wanting some great answers on bike security, we figured the best place to turn to were the people who ride, the experts who have travelled to many different destinations in the world, and who would have the experience first hand on how to protect your motorcycle and gear from thieves.

Pan-American, Motorcycles & Friends - Good Things Come in Threes
This is a story about friendship, trust and adventure. Steve Mason, Raymond Danton and Wilson Hutchison were friends and biking buddies in Southwest Scotland in their teens. They eventually drifted apart to different lives, as many of us do, living in different countries. After over 30 years, a chance encounter brings these friends back together and they once again begin doing bike trips together. After a few short adventures, they decide they are ready for something bigger and they take on the Pan-American Highway in February 2015. After about 5 months and 34,000 km (22,000 m) they still remain good friends with great memories and stories to tell.

Africa Motorcycle Diaries - Spencer Conway
In November, 2009, Spencer Conway left for a 9 month journey around Africa on his Yamaha XT660. His journey was documented by Diesel Films in partnership with the Discovery Channel. Although he was followed around by the film company for parts of the trip, they were not allowed to offer any assistance as the trip was to be completely solo and without a support team. The plan was to complete the tour and raise money for Save the Children UK for it’s projects in Africa. He experienced a great deal on this trip, being shot at by armed bandits, stoned by angry villagers and being robbed.
Much has come of the adventure including a book that he is in the process of writing and a six episode programme on UK and Europe TV this November on the Travel Channel.

Some go for a few months, some for a few years. Scotty Kerekes has been living on the road for twenty-one years. What started out as a soul searching experience turned in to a lifestyle for him. After being on the road for a year, Scotty realized that there was no turning back. He ended up selling everything he owned except for what fit on his bike, and hit the road… for good.
Scotty tells us what it’s like to live on the road, he is very candid about the hardships and highlights of his experiences. He talks about finding places to sleep, finances, the social aspect, relationships and more. It’s what some would perhaps consider an eccentric gypsy lifestyle, but for Scotty, and for a lot of us who dare to dream and dare to do, it just feels… right.

In Pakistan, women’s mobility in public is a major social issue. There are socially sanctioned rules which indicate how a woman may sit as a passenger on a motorcycle. But, Zenith Irfan, a 20 year old female student in Pakistan, has become a heroin to women who want to have the independence and choice to ride a motorcycle. Zenith says that there is a social taboo for women motorcycle riders in Pakistan, but one of her goals is to stop the gender stereotyping and encourage Pakistani women to follow their dreams.
Inspired by her father’s unrealized dream to travel the world by motorcycle, and encouraged by her liberal mother, Zenith travelled the treacherous terrain of the Pak-occupied Kashmir belt in northern Pakistan on a solo motorcycle adventure for one week.
She is an icon for women riders around the world, crossing barriers and making the choice to… just ride no matter what.

Jolandie Rust
After circumnavigating Africa, Jo Rust doesn’t know the meaning of taking a break. She’s now training to try to be the first female on the South Africa team at the BMW GS Trophy in 2016. She’s an off-road instructor and been appointed a BMW Ambassador. Oh, and did we mention she also runs the BMW GS Trophy Fans page and BMW GS Girls? They say if you want something done, give it to a busy person… well Jo is certainly a busy person and she gets things done!
Spokes vs Cast with T.G. “Woody” Witte
When we decided to do a tech piece on spoke vs cast wheels, we asked around a bit, and the name that kept coming up was Woody from Woody’s Wheel Works in Denver, Colorado. They’ve been around since 1973 and that certainly says something about their expertise and qualifications. Woody is known for the incredibly strong spoke wheels he builds for Dakar racers, show cruisers and solar powered vehicles. On this show we talk about the difference between spoke and cast wheels and their applications, we learn how to check spoked wheels to ensure safe and proper operations and to know when they need service. And when you might want to use a spoked wheel over a cast wheel.

Against all OddsBernard Smith was told it was too dangerous to take a blind woman around the world. But, with Bernard as her pilot, Cathy Birchall was the first blind woman to circle the world by motorcycle. They rode their old BMW motorcycle, covering 25,000 miles, experiencing many breakdowns and along the way discovering the kindness and generosity of strangers. Tired of the cubicle job at BBC, in 2003 at 29 years old Lois quit her job and set out on a solo adventure riding her 225 Yamaha Serow from Alaska to Ushuaia. You can read about her motorcycle adventures travelling to the southern most town in the world, at the tip of Argentina in her book, Lois on the Loose. She had barely returned back home in the UK before she was planning her next adventure to Africa where she took in the Sahara, the Congo and Angola. Four months and ten thousand miles later, she documented this adventure in her book Red Tape & White Knuckles. She is now working on her third book about her travels in Iran in 2013/2014. Lois is also a freelance journalist, broadcaster and speaker, giving presentations about her adventures to many different types of organizations. She's the co-founder of the Adventure Travel Film Festival with husband, Austin Vince, with whom she crossed the USA in a vintage Russian Sidecar outfit.
